Hi friends! Happy Saturday morning.
Today we are discussing a topic I wish everyone knew about: thought distortions. Once you understand the ways your brain tricks you (yep, it tricks you and no, that doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with you), you can RECOGNIZE when this is happening and take steps to manage it effectively. This helps you move through the day with awareness and accountability, and ultimately a more positive and stable mood.
This doesn’t mean we don’t trust ourselves… it’s the opposite. We are aware of how susceptible our brains are to stimuli, and to counteract that we are going to more actively explore these thoughts, while also ignoring others.
Starting today you are no longer at the whim of random thoughts and filters.
So let’s get into it:
Thought distortions were coined by psychiatrist Dr. Aaron Beck back in the 60s when he noticed common themes that showed up in thinking. Research suggests we have over 6,200 thoughts a day! If we both believed and reacted to each and every thought, we would end up reactive, exhausted, and further away from trusting ourselves... sound familiar?
